Virgin Galactic is seeking a mechanical or aerospace engineer eager to support innovative aerospace vehicle mechanical systems. The engineer will be expected to lead Unity (spaceship) and Eve (mothership) mechanical systems operations support. The primary task for the person will be to lead operational readiness of the space flight system’s mechanical systems components and assemblies.
- Leads mechanical systems engineers providing MRB (material review board) support to Virgin Galactic’s operational vehicles
- Coordinates with the systems substantiation department to ensure component performance in flight environments
- Supports test definition to verify that components and manufacturing processes meet design intent and engineering requirements
- Participates in the design, review, approval, and release process of engineering modifications and repairs
- Uses engineering judgment to evaluate manufacturing and vehicle integration issues and dispositions nonconformance reports
- Coordinates technical issues between Engineering, Vehicle Maintenance, Quality, Technical Publications and Flight Operations teams to minimize vehicle turn-time with a vigilant focus on safety
- Supports technical review of engineering changes tied to future space flight system (SFS) flights
- Coordinate lessons-learned on the SFS with engineers working future vehicle designs
- Other duties to support company objectives as required
What you bring: Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with a concentration in Aeronautical, Astronautical, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering
- 8+ years of relevant industry experience
- Experience with CATIA V5 strongly preferred, or SOLIDWORKS or equivalent
- Broad based aircraft experience with knowledge of design manufacturing tolerances for production of components using GD&T
- Experience with Product Lifecycle Management tools (PLM software), Requirements management tools and configuration management
- Excellent analytical and decision-making skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational and time-management skills, strong team player.
- Strong experience using Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Ability to mentor and train others
- Desire to question the status quo
- Proactive/self-sufficient/able to work and add value with no oversight
- Willingness to learn new things and continually improve capabilities/skills

Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Experience with life safety design/requirements
- Experience with prototype, development, experimental and/or innovative products
- Hands-on experience with equipment assembly, fabrication, and installation
The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $132,100.00–$201,550.00. The base pay actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
