Summary:
The Optical Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and operating test equipment used to validate optical flight hardware meets design requirements. This role interfaces closely with the design and production teams to deliver a hardware design that is capable of cost-effective mass production.
The ideal candidate for this role:
- Possess a thorough understanding and extensive experience in optical system design, modeling, and performance quantification.
- Demonstrate the ability to quickly learn and apply optical optimization principles, including expertise in imaging sensors, photo detectors, wavefront metrology, beam profiling, lasers, and fiber optics.
- Exhibit strong analytical skills for building models and solving complex problems.
- Proven experience in the following fields is highly desirable: optics for telecommunications systems, optical instruments for astronomy, far-field propagation, diffractive optics, imaging optics, imaging sensors, stray light analysis, opto-mechanical design, and stop analysis.
Duties:
- Design and specify optical metrology systems and key components, such as lenses, optical relays, image sensing modules, photodetectors, and light sources.
- Derive quantified requirements for optical metrology instruments using analytical techniques, numerical modeling, and bench-top testing.
- Take the lead in customizing optical instrument vendors' offerings when necessary, ensuring that the instrument performance meets mass production requirements.
- Define Engineering Requirement Specifications (ERS) for calibration and measurement of optical instruments and automated systems.
- Conduct hardware/software validation for optical metrology systems.
- Develop root cause analysis for products exhibiting non-conformances in the optics module.
- Analyze large amounts of laboratory data for validation and improvement purposes.
- Provide clear and rigorous presentations and reports on the subjects listed above, effectively communicating with a broad range of cross-functional teams.

- Integrate and collaborate hands-on with multiple disciplines, including software, electrical, control, and mechanical engineering.
- Possess excellent communication skills to convey technical concepts clearly and efficiently across a range of subject areas, engaging with management, peers, and suppliers.
- Develop and document assembly, fabrication, and test procedures for colleagues to follow.
- Organize and deliver assigned projects independently according to the project schedule.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for working on multiple projects simultaneously in a self-directed manner, thriving in a fast-paced, multi-cultural startup environment.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience in optical system design, modeling, and validation, with a minimum of 5 years in a similar role.
- Knowledge in the development of space optical instruments, especially in the field of telescopes, spectrometers and interferometers within an industrial or scientific environment.
- Proficient in one or more optical modeling tools for imaging optics, such as Zemax or CodeV.
- Strong quantitative data analysis abilities using tools such as Matlab, Python, or equivalent.
- To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, candidate must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
Preferred Experience:
- Space-flight industry experience
- Spanish speaking is a plus
- Laser Safety knowledge
- Experience working in clean room environment from ISO 5 to ISO 8
