Position Summary
Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a
Lead Avionics Assembly Technician to support our engineering and production development. If you join us in this position, you will work on the Avionics team supporting manufacturing.
This is a
full time position at our rocket factory in beautiful
Long Beach, CA.
Your Part of the Mission
- Lead a team of technicians, assigning and managing the work backlog.
- Able to prioritize and forecast workload between R&D and Production, to support both programs.
- Maintain technician tools and other equipment for the team, including calibration.
- Provide training for technicians on techniques and certifications required to successfully complete their daily tasks.
- Understand and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical assembly drawings for PCBAs, harnesses and Avionics assemblies.
- Support debug PCBAs with test equipment including Oscilloscopes, Multi Meters, power supplies, etc, perform surface mount assembly including removal and replacement of components.
- Fabricate harnesses to support production and engineering tests.
- Provide assembly support from engineering development to production encompassing assembly and test.
- Help assemble new designs including PCBAs, test harnesses, test boxes and test racks – this will include soldering, cutting and crimping harnesses, building mechanical assemblies, as well as fabricating and modifying metal and plastic enclosures.
- Use lessons learned to provide feedback to engineering to improve designs and processes and write assembly and test procedures.
- Have a meticulous approach to quality control.

Minimum Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience as an avionics lead technician.
- Familiarity with all aspects of the assembly process, from initial to final build.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years’ experience in related field.
- Able to assemble PCBAs to component level, build, test and troubleshoot assemblies and harnessing.
- Must be able to use power tools for modifying mechanical assemblies, such as power drills, table saws, etc.
- Must be able to interpret electronic and harness schematics.
- Must be able to operate standard assembly lab equipment, including soldering tools, Multi Meters, Megohmmeter, torque tools, Power Supplies, etc.
- Experienced in basic office software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience working in backlog and WIP control software, including Jira, Smartsheet and Solumnia.
- Must have great communication abilities to work well with engineering and production.
- Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
- Ability and willingness to perform effectively in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
- Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement.
- Generally high level of all-around awesomeness.
Additional Qualifications
- Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.
- Must be willing to work varying shifts and additional hours to support critical launch activities.
- Willingness to travel (~25% of time).
- Ability to lift up to 25lbs unassisted.
Salary Range
$35.00 - $50.00
