EUMETSAT’s role is to establish and operate meteorological satellites to monitor the weather and climate from space - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This information is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's Member and Cooperating States in Europe, as well as other users worldwide.
EUMETSAT opened a portfolio of cloud-based big data services in 2020 to bring users to its data. The portfolio is based on advanced architectures, applications, user portals and hosted processing capabilities with full integration across the entire cloud stack from Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) up to Data as a Service (DaaS). EUMETSAT has a key role in several cloud-based international initiatives such as DIAS, WekEO, European Weather Cloud (EWC) and Destination Earth.
Within the Competence Area of Cloud Services in the Digital Solutions and SAF Division (DSA), the Cloud Services Engineer will be the main technical focal point for all cloud services and solutions developed by DSA that have a focus on downstream applications. The postholder will manage the engineering, evolution and maintenance of those cloud services, including procurement and management of industrial support and services needed for their development, implementation, evolution and achieving the targeted service levels
He/She will provide expert support regarding applications and workflows on hybrid cloud services to the EUMETSAT teams responsible for system operations and delivery of services to users. The support also includes supporting the on-boarding of new complex internal and external user projects that requires IaaS, PaaS in support to application level services. The post holder will work in close collaboration with engineering and development teams in order to evaluate and identify optimal cloud solutions.
What you’ll be doing
- Design, develop and maintain the services provided by the EUMETSAT hybrid cloud, including, on the basis of user needs, the planning of its capacity and the definition/planning/implementation of the roadmap for evolutions and new features, which will shape and support the implementation of the overall EUMETSAT Cloud Strategy;
- Ensure coherence of used technologies in different EUMETSAT cloud undertakings, seek and strive for synergies across all of them;
- Design new and maintain/evolve existing cloud services on the basis of evolving needs, experience and requirements of users;
- Lead and coordinate all necessary activities to ensure successful end-to-end cloud services implementation, maintain relevant technical budgets, provide relevant technical requirements to other teams and projects;
- Liaise with other divisions and teams on the topics of IT infrastructure and security services;
- Support Operations/User Services in the on-boarding of new users and projects, by providing expert support in terms of usage of EUMETSAT cloud infrastructure and the related services;
- Provide technical expertise to the other teams in EUMETSAT on private and public cloud infrastructure services, including container management solutions and higher level cloud services;
- Promote and advocate cloud technologies adoption in EUMETSAT including establishment of best practices as well as sharing and maintaining the “know-how”;
- Automate routine processes and monitoring using industry standard application programming interfaces (API);
- Manage corresponding industrial support contracts.

Requirements
Qualifications:
A University Masters level degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science (Business), Software Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience gained in a Service Delivery role, preferably working with cloud based IT services in an operational and user oriented environment.
Skills and Experience:
- Practical experience with hybrid on-premises and off-premises cloud infrastructure;
- Strong and applied expertise in cloud infrastructure architecture and implementations;
- At least three to five years of hands-on experience with private and public cloud services including Kubernetes;
- Excellent troubleshooting skills, up-to-date knowledge of industry trends;
- Applied hands-on experience with APIs, automation and orchestration using Python, Ruby or Java;
- Excellent organisational, communication and presentation skills, pro-active and team-player attitude, the ability to work autonomously with a minimum of supervision under high workloads.
Following additional experience in the areas listed below will be considered as strong advantage:
- Computer systems maintenance and operations 24/7;
- Hands-on experience with various distributed processing frameworks;
- Knowledge of formal system & service development, verification and validation;
- Agile methodology;
- Cloud native applications, JupyterHub, AI/ML, ELK stack, FaaS and serverless;
- Knowledge of cloud technologies and cloud services available on the European market.

EUMETSAT is an international organisation employing staff from across all 30 member states and this role is being advertised on multiple international job boards, but please note that this role would be based in Darmstadt, Germany and would require international applicants to relocate if successful.
