Senior Environmental Health & Safety Engineer - Air Quality Engineer
Position Summary
Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking an experienced
Senior Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer professional who will play a key role in the implementation, operation and maintenance of environmental compliance and safety programs, with a strong emphasis on air permitting and air compliance. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California, though will require travel to, and work at, our Mojave Test Site as needed.
Your Mission
- Develop, administer and implement environmental air quality compliance programs in accordance with South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and Eastern Kern Air Pollution Control District (EKAPCD) requirements
- Prepare and/or oversees preparation of Permit to Construct (PTC) and Permit to Operate (PTO) applications for SCAQMD and EKAPCD
- Air program manager for SCAQMD facility wide compliance at our Long Beach facilities
- Air Program manager for EKAPCD facility wide compliance at our test site in Mojave, CA
- Apply knowledge of environmental regulations to evaluate facility projects, process changes, and assist other teammates in defining compliance requirements for processes and equipment
- Interact with federal, state and local regulators to resolve compliance issues; assists with Federal, State and local regulatory audits
- Oversight of monthly recordkeeping and performing emissions calculations for permitted sources and facility wide chemical usage to ensure compliance with emissions limits
- Oversight of mobile and portable sources, including PERP registrations and monthly recordkeeping, and DOORS reporting and recordkeeping
- Oversee compliance and auditing efforts
- AER preparation and submittal, if applicable, air quality compliance monitoring and reporting
- Develop and implement effective environmental air quality compliance training
- Develop, implement and maintain site specific environmental air compliance policies in accordance with government requirements
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations relating to the aerospace industry
- Assist with other applicable environmental compliance related efforts, as required

What You Bring
If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…
- 5+ years of experience working with environmental compliance, air permitting and air compliance issues
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Chemical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering; Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or a related discipline
- Excellent computer skills - including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Strong attention to detail and excellent communication, analytical, customer service and organizational skills
- Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR
- 120.15)
- Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
- Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
- Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail
- Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit

- NDPES permitting (industrial stormwater, construction stormwater and wastewater)
- Hazardous and Non-Hazardous waste management
- Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasures (SPCC)
- California Aboveground Petroleum Storage Act (APSA)
- Spill Reporting & Emergency Response
- General knowledge of OSHA regulations, CAL OSHA regulations and Health & Safety disciplines
- Aerospace or Manufacturing industry experience is preferred, but not required
- Ability to multi-task, to manage shifting priorities and to follow through on projects with minimal supervision
- Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

Salary Range
$90,000 - $130,000
