This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).
Program Description
Interns will create an art project inspired by or representative of MAST science data. Artwork can be created independently or in collaboration with other interns.
- 6-weeks: July 10th - August 18th
- 10-15 hours of work a week
- Cohort of 8 interns from the Baltimore region
- Meet in person at Space Telescope Science Institute once a week for 2.5 hours
- Write a weekly Journal of your process
- Artwork will be released under an open license and shared for science outreach and educational purposes
- Possibility of participating in educational trainings, workshops, and outings
Requirements to apply:
- Live in our local market as described above. A preference will be given to students residing and attending high school in Baltimore City and County.
- Be 16 years of age or older when program begins
- Submit an existing piece of art work you’ve made in your chosen medium
- Write a brief paragraph describing how you would create art about MAST data
- Be able to attend the 6 meetings in person
Additional qualifications:
- Strong organizational skills;
- Ability to work under time constraints and deliver to agreed deadlines and standards;
- Ability to work both on your own initiative and as part of a team.
Example project ideas:
- Art from previous interns
- Compose electronic music using space sonifications
- Paint a JWST image
- Create an interactive fiction game where the player discovers a new planet
- Write and record yourself reading a sci-fi story about space
- Create an animation about heartbeat stars
- Whatever else you can imagine!
